Matjaž
Dolšek is Professor of Civil Engineering and Environmental
Engineering at Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering (FGG), University of
Ljubljana (UL) and a leader of research program Earthquake Engineering.
Currently, he is also the Vice-Dean for Research and International Activities
at UL FGG.
Matjaž
Dolšek has participated in several European projects (SPEAR -
G6RD-CT-2001-00525, LESSLOSS - GOTSE-CT-2003-505448, SERIES,
FP7-INFRASTRUCTURES-2008, STREST – coordinated by ETH Zurich). He was the project
leader of three basic research projects sponsored by Slovenian Research Agency.
All projects were very well evaluated, especially the latter project, which
received the highest score possible. He is a leader at the partner’s
organization (UL FGG) for two European projects: XP-RESILIENCE
(MSCA-ITN-ETN-2016) and NEWREBAR (Research
Found for Coal and Steel). He was also the coordinator of the Slovenian-US
(Stanford University), Slovenian-Italian (European Centre for Training and Research
in Earthquake Engineering) and Slovenian-Cypriot bilateral research project.
He is
involved in teaching at seven courses at all three levels of study and at one
course from the Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program in Environmental Protection.
A lot of time dedicates to the individual work with young researchers. He was a
mentor at six and co-mentor at four doctorates. Currently, he is an advisor of four
PhD students. He also teaches engineers (e.g. the introduction of Eurocode in Slovenia, training about the seismic safety of
buildings that are relevant for nuclear safety). M. Dolšek participated in many
projects for practice. Among others, he led an experimental study on the
seismic resistance of selected construction sub-assemblages for energy-efficient
construction system JUBHome and study on the development
of guidelines for earthquake-resistant design of such houses.
For
more than ten years he is involved in projects related to safety upgrade for
structures and components of the units of Nuclear Power plant Krško. He was a member of a team who prepared the seismic
stress test of Nuclear Power Plant Krško after the
Fukushima event. In 2015 he was a leader of the project team who developed
seismic fragility functions of the structural components of the safety-related
bunkered building in the NPP. Later on, he was a leader of the expert team who
prepared an evaluation of the project for building permit for the building
which includes Alternate Auxiliary Feedwater System
and for the Spent Fuel Dry Storage building. For the latter buildings, M.Dolšek supervised the development
of methodology and evaluation of the fragility analysis. In addition, he led
the evaluation of the project for building permit of the repository for low and
medium nuclear waste. In this context he also led independent seismic analysis with
an emphasis of developing the design methodology with consideration of the environmental
and the construction legislation as a coupled problem.
M.
Dolšek is a member of the Slovenian Chamber of Engineers, a member of the
Slovenian and the European Association for Earthquake Engineering and a member
of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (USA). In the context of the
European Association for Earthquake Engineering participate in the working
group WG1: Future directions of Eurocode 8. This
group is responsible for the development of methods of seismic analysis and to
determine the objectives of the code in terms of acceptable seismic risk. Based
on the tender of the European Commission he was selected in the Project Team
(CEN / TC250 / SC8-PT1), which is preparing the second generation of standard
for earthquake-resistant design of structures - Eurocode
8. He is a member of technical committees Slovenian Institute for Standardization
SIST / TC KON.001 - Fundamentals of design, SIST / TC KON.008 – Earthquake-resistant
construction).
M.
Dolšek organized several special sessions at international conferences and an
international workshop Protection of Built Environment Against Earthquakes. The
results of the workshop are published in the scientific monograph of the same
name (M. Dolšek editor), which was attended by 30 authors from around the
world, and which has issued an international publishing house Springer.
